Committees
Fauquier Habitat for Humanity is an organization that is run on volunteer power. Committees are the backbone of the organization providing support to specific areas of the affiliate. Most committees are chaired by a Board Member and are manned by volunteers. Below is a list of committees currently working within Fauquier Habitat for Humanity:
Finance and Administration (Chaired by Dana Pappas, Treasurer)
This committee oversees the finance and day-to-day function of the affiliate office. The Executive Director reports to the Board and the Finance and Administration Committee. The members of the Finance and Administration Committee is responsible for the financial well-being of the organization.
Building Committee (Chaired by Bill Beals)
The Building Committee is responsible for planning and implementing construction projects. Tasks undertaken by the committee include obtaining house plans and associated building permits, soliciting donations of building materials, supervising construction and coordinating volunteers at the job site. Building experience is helpful but not required. During a build, this committee meets on Monday’s at 4:00.
Church Relations Committee (Chaired by Cris Mitchell)
This committee establishes and maintains strong relationships with local congregations, enlists their support for projects, and promotes Fauquier Habitat for Humanity’s mission of making adequate shelter a matter of conscience and action in our community. Activities include public speaking and leading discussions of Habitat’s goals and activities, organizing a church committee, and coordinating the participation of individual congregations. Monthly meeting to be determined.
Development Committee (Chaired by Michelle Winner)
The Development Committee covers two areas – first it is responsible for raising funds for our house sponsorship. We love to keep our events easy and effective. We are continuously looking for new ideas and individuals who are interested in helping out or leading events and funding projects. This committee is also responsible for grant writing, solicitations, foundation requests, and building relationships with the business community. Secondly, it is also responsible for organizing and leading volunteer labor for build days, holding volunteer orientations, and coordinating with Building Committees. The committee may also organize special events such as volunteer appreciation days and training workshops. The committee proactively works to build better Habitat houses and ensure all volunteers have the best possible Habitat experience. This committee supports all other committees. Meets once a month.
Family Selection Committee (Chaired by Craig Andrews)
This committee is responsible for selecting homeowner families. Activities include recruiting prospective families, screening applications, interviewing applicants and their references, visiting their current home, and recommending applicants for approval by the Board of Directors. Meets 2nd Thursday of each month.
Family Partnership Committee (Chaired by Rosanne Gorkowski)
This committee works directly with families after they have been selected to partner with Fauquier Habitat for Humanity. Family Partnership is the principal point of contact with current and prospective homeowner families. The committee works to provide a mutual support system to facilitate the transition to home ownership, including educational opportunities in home ownership and maintenance, family finance and community resources. This is our most challenging and rewarding committee. Many of our committee members maintain close family-like relationships with their partners throughout their entire experience as Habitat homeowners. Partnership once a month.
Site Selection Committee (Chaired by John Suter)
The Site Selection Committee has responsibility for locating, evaluating and recommending to the Board for purchase properties appropriate to Fauquier Habitat’s mission and objectives. The committee works in close cooperation with the Building Committee to ensure the suitability of property prior to acquisition. Experience with land acquisition is helpful but not required. Meets as required.
Women Build (Co Chairs – Kim Cybulski and Krista Coyner)
Women Build works to recruit, empower, and train women to build simple, decent, and affordable homes. The Women Build worksite provides a unique opportunity to learn construction skills and to build leadership and teamwork skills. If you are not interested in building, that’s ok! We have many other needs that can be filled. Fauquier Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build invites you to make friends and memories that will last a lifetime while making a lasting change in our community. This committee meets the first Thursday of every month.
ReStore Steering Committee
The Restore Steering Committee’s mission is to open and oversee a ReStore here in the Warrenton area. The search for the right location has been ongoing since 2008. We are currently negotiating with a building owner and are in hopes to open in late spring of 2011. The ReStore will sell gently used home improvement items from donors in the community as well as new items. The store will be manned by a ReStore Manager and many wonderful volunteers. Proceeds from the ReStore will support the building projects of Fauquier Habitat for Humanity. For more information about getting involved with this project, please email us at info@fauquierhabitat.org.
