About Us
Fauquier Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. We serve the Fauquier and Rappahannock County communities. We are working in partnership with community churches, businesses, volunteers and families to eliminate the blight of poverty housing: leaky roofs, lack of indoor plumbing, kitchen or bath facilities, no source of heat, and other unsafe or unsanitary conditions.
Since 1991, we have builtĀ 44 homes, rehabilitated several others and have embarked on our most ambitious project yet – construction of a seven-duplex subdivision at Sterling Court, just off Academy Hill Drive in Warrenton. In May 2010, we completed the first duplex. During 2011, two more duplexes were completed giving four Fauquier Habitat families the opportunity to purchase a decent, affordable home.
Together, we are changing lives. Local families become tax payers, rather than tax receivers. With safe, decent and stable homes, their children are more likely to be successful in school, and in life. Blighted housing is eliminated, improving the community for all. And as our dedicated volunteers will tell you, working with Fauquier Habitat transforms their lives, as well! The joys of making a real difference, learning new skills, and being part of a true community are priceless. Fauquier HFH works in partnership with the community and people in need to build and renovate homes to provide simple, decent, affordable housing.
Habitat is a “hand-up” not a handout. Fauquier Habitat sells the homes to families at cost with no-interest mortgages to keep the monthly payments affordable for the homeowner. Those mortgage payments go back into a revolving fund for Fauquier Habitat that is used to build more houses. Our dedicated volunteers contribute their labor to reduce the cost to build. National sponsors and local businesses provide generous support, as well. Our partner families invest hundreds of hours of labor known as “sweat equity” into building their homes and the homes of others.
VOLUNTEERS:
Volunteers are the heart and soul of Fauquier Habitat. Without their time, talents, and dedication, we could not fight so hard to put an end to poverty housing in our community. Our volunteers come from all walks of life; men, women, teens, retirees, friends, and parents from local churches, businesses, schools, and clubs. Some volunteers choose to become involved with building, and we have offered free training workshops over the years in different areas of construction. Construction experience is absolutely not necessary. Volunteers may choose to join a committee such as Fundraising or Partnership. Some donate materials, land or services while others want to make lunches and snacks for the crews on build days. The sky is the limit and we always encourage new ideas on how best to use time while working to improve the lives of our neighbors.
We try very hard to accommodate everyone but, depending on the phase of construction or number of homes in progress, we may have limited hands-on building opportunities. Please remember that there are many other ways to help. Check out our calendar, where you can view all upcoming events, the build schedule and other opportunities to participate in this most worthwhile effort. CURRENT BUILDING INFORMATION:
We have completed four of seven attached, single-family homes at Sterling Court Subdivision located off Academy Hill Road in Warrenton. These energy-efficient homes are designed by local architect Jim Hricko. During 2011, FOUR families will celebrate their purchase of a decent, affordable home!
